Denmark. The late 18th century. Caroline (Alicia Vikander) marries the Danish King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) only to discover that he is juvenile, impulsive, and often cruel. The two live in a state of mutual disregard until Christian hires as his personal physician the progressive Johann Friedrich Struensee (Mads Mikkelsen, Casino Royale). What followed became one of the great scandals in the European royal courts of the time.
