Dream World
By Hester Jones
3rd March till 29th March
In Dream World, the artist Hester Jones collaborated with children in the local community of Westminster, to make photographic portraits of the children as their chosen fairy tale character or superhero, with accompanying stories. Through the exploration of art, photography, and fairy tales, the project broadened cultural and religious understanding between children; addressing issues of bullying and racism.
When photographing the imagination of children, Hester Jones explores identity, the loss of childhood innocence, and the child’s vulnerability in today’s society. More ‘traditional’ notions of photography are challenged as questions of authorship are raised; the collaborative process blurs the boundaries between photographer and subject. Who is the author, the artist or the child?

30th March til late April
I draw cities from rooftops to practice looking. Scrutinizing the city is meditative. The ink line drawings show a need in me to analyze and record detail, and to fill the paper with drawn information. I start the ink drawings by roughly measuring one building in relation to another. The process of drawing from then on feels a bit like knitting or making a jigsaw puzzle. All the building are treated with the same line so the city becomes one entity. The charcoal drawings are more spontaneous and are about light and shadow, mass, weight, weather and solidity.
My city drawings are also about the feeling of exhilaration I have when looking down at a city from a rooftop. The distance from me to the ground and out to the horizon feels as though it is pulling me and I try to convey this in the drawings, the way the city seems to rush out from below the building I’m in.
The drawings in this exhibition were made in London in March and September 2007.
