Director: Lars von Trier. Starring: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Willem Dafoe. Denmark, Germany, France 2009.
A special chance to see Lars von Trier’s controversial film before release.
A grieving couple retreat to ’Eden’, an isolated cabin in the woods, where they hope to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage, but nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse. A bravura piece of filmmaking from celebrated director von Trier, Antichrist caused something of a furore at Cannes for its audacious approach to the horror genre. Certainly not for the faint hearted, at its core lies some striking visuals (courtesy of Anthony Dod Mantle, Slumdog Millionaire) and two fiercely committed performances from Dafoe (The Walker) and Gainsbourg (The Science of Sleep), who won the Cannes Best Actress prize. This is a film that simply demands to be seen.
