Arguably Britain’s most audacious actor, Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton, Burn After Reading) plays Julia, a 40 year-old alcoholic scraping through a life of vodka and one night stands. Encouraged to attend AA after she loses her job, she meets with a Mexican neighbour (Elena) who provides Julia with a potential way out. Elena proposes to pay Julia $50,000 if she will aid in the kidnap and ransom of her son Tommy (Aidan Gould) who is in the care of his rich grandfather following his father’s death. Driven to the brink of financial and emotional desperation, Julia must make a decision that will either pull her back, or push her over. This is a terrifically engaging road movie powered by a characteristically courageous central performance from Swinton.
