We welcome director Kenny Glenaan and actors Robert Carlyle and Steve Evets to answer questions after a preview of their new film, Summer.
SUMMER (15)
Director Kenny Glenaan
Starring Robert Carlyle, Steve Evets, Rachael Blake, Michael Socha, Sean Kelly, Jo Doherty, Joanna Tulej
UK 2008. 95 mins.
Combining an intelligent, moving study of loyalty and loss with an eloquent critique of the effects of social exclusion, Summer marks out director Kenny Glenaan (Gas Attack) as a major voice in contemporary British cinema. A tough but entertaining portrait of a life gone helplessly awry, Summer emphasises the indelibility of childhood experience and the inequality of opportunity. At home, Shaun (Robert Carlyle) spends his time caring for his wheelchair-bound best friend Daz (Steve Evets). As Shaun assesses his lot, we piece together a story of misfortune, and a stigma proving impossible to erase. Carlyle is astonishing in the central role, but he’s more than matched by Evets, who is bitter, lucid and hilarious in equal measure.
