Peter Wright’s production of this seasonal favourite is classical ballet at its most approachable and visually entrancing. E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story tells of one Christmas Eve, when young Clara creeps downstairs for one of her presents, but instead finds herself at the start of a night of magical adventures. Through it all, Tchaikovsky’s music is some of the most instantly memorable of all ballet, with a wealth of famous melodies.

Handel’s death was on 14th April 1759 – exactly 250 years ago in April 2009. This performance will be screened live from the Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge on Palm Sunday – 5th April. Stephen Cleobury will conduct the Choir with the Adademy of Ancient Music providing the orchestra.

Frederick Ashton’s three-act ballet Ondine was famously created for Margot Fonteyn and Michael Soames. The storyline is of a playful and mischevious water sprite who falls in love with a mortal with tragic consequences, with music by Hans Werner Henze. Highlights include the famous shadow dance in Act 1 and a dramatic shipwreck in Act 2.
