Special Preview and Q&A with director Baltasar Kormákur, Curzon Soho, Wednesday 12 August, 6.30PM
Based on the bestselling novel by Icelandic crime writer Arnaldur Indridason and helmed by the director of 101 REYKJAVIK, JAR CITY follows detective Erlendur (Sigurdsson) as he investigates the murder of a lowlife. Erlendur and his two partners soon discover that there may be greater and darker forces at play. Elsewhere in the locality, a father mourning his daughter who died from a genetic condition obsessively searches for information on the origin of the disease. These apparently disparate stories dramatically converge around a commercial databank that holds genetic information on all of Iceland’s inhabitants. As one of the most important contemporary Icelandic directors, Kormákur was ideally placed to transpose Indridason’s gripping, authentic and haunting prose to the screen, complete with its heavy mood, multilayered narrative and focus on the minutiae of police procedure.
