2018 Oscar Nominated Short Films: Live Action

Each year the Academy Awards recognise emerging filmmakers working with short form cinema. This year we screen the nominees from the live action category, offering a snapshot of world cinema in 2018.

Short films get straight to the heart of their subject and the films in this programme address prescient themes of a school shooting, racist murders, a psychiatric session, a deaf child learning sign language and the tensions between Muslims and Christians in Kenya.

Featured films:

  • DeKalb Elementary (Reed Van Dyk, 20mins)
  • The Silent Child (Chris Overton and Rachel Shenton, 20mins)
  • My Nephew Emmett (Kevin Wilson, Jr., 19mins)
  • The Eleven O'Clock (Derin Seale and Josh Lawson, 13mins)
  • Watu Wote (Katja Benrath and Tobias Rosen, 22mins)
