Dolemite is My Name

Dolemite is My Name

Played with all the verve you would expect from Eddie Murphy, this tale of a rowdy, foul-mouthed comedian who became a phenomenon is a feel good treat and a return to form for Murphy. When Hollywood shuts him out, multi-talented Rudy Ray Moore (Murphy) strikes out on his own to make the 1975 blaxploitation film Dolemite. A successful stand up, he wants to make the next step up the ladder, but it’s only when he creates the outsize, swaggering pimp character Dolemite that the world takes notice. Sinking his life savings into taking Dolemite to the big screen, can he succeed or is all lost?

Moore’s entourage is made up of killer scene-stealers, from Keegan-Michael Key to Wesley Snipes to Snoop Dogg. Told with all the glitz and polyester of the '70s by the co-writers of Ed Wood and rendered by Oscar-winning designer Ruth E. Carter, Murphy’s central performance puts him into the awards conversation.
