We are honoured to welcome the Rt Hon Jeremy Corbyn MP, Leader of the Labour Party, to Curzon Chelsea for a DocDays screening and discussion about one of the key documentaries of 2017, Dispossession: The Great Housing Swindle, by director Paul Sng, which explores the agenda behind the neglect, demolition and regeneration of council estates in the U.K. over the past thirty years. The panel includes Sng and is hosted by Anna Minton, journalist and author of Big Capital.
In 2017 housing rose to the top of the British political agenda for the first time in a generation. Despite the media spotlight, few stories examined the catastrophic long-term failures that resulted in a chronic shortage of social housing in the United Kingdom. The film reveals how individuals and communities are fighting against the state and private developers, as they try to save their homes from demolition while investigating the decisions that turned a crisis into a tragedy.
Since the film was first screened, the devastating fire occurred at Grenfell Tower. The tragic loss of life and the neglect of the Tower itself have become symbolic of the institutional disregard of social housing.
Dispossession is the story of people who believe that housing is not an expensive luxury, but a fundamental human right.
This Q&A event with Jeremy Corbyn, Anna Minton and Paul Sng will provide an engaging forum to discuss this defining issue of 2017.
Thursday 14 December 6.30pm, Curzon Chelsea.
