Motherless Brooklyn

Motherless Brooklyn

Edward Norton first major role for many years sees him directing Jonathan Lethem's crime novel.

Norton stars as Lionel Essrog, a private detective who is tasked with solving a case with painful connections: the murder of his mentor and boss Frank (Bruce Willis). He's extremely detailed fixated, but also must contend with verbal tics as he unpicks the facts of this conspiracy, covering everyone in the city, from housing campaigner Laura (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) to city-shaping architect Moses (Alec Baldwin).

Norton's noirish telling is enhanced by the work of cinematographer Dick Pope (frequent collaborator of Mike Leigh) and his smart expansion of Lethem's novel resituates it in a New York that is being forcibly divided by powerful forces.

A rare modern gumshoe story that keeps you guessing, built around a terrific ensemble cast.
