Jafar Panahi – still under house arrest and banned from filmmaking – follows up Taxi Tehran with another powerful and mischievous statement on the importance of making art.
3 Faces begins with a desperate video message from an actor. Panahi heads off with fellow actor Behnaz Jafari (both playing themselves) to find her. We are taken on a tour of Iran, a panorama that slowly builds a portrait of the difficulty of female actors living in a patriarchal society.
Humane and thoughtful, this is nonetheless a powerful reproach to forces that censor and control.
